In the heart of the “City of romance”, Tezpur, beside the beautiful Chitrolekha Udyan, and on the bank of the great ever flowing river Brahmaputra, stands the first Catholic Christian missionary school of Tezpur, the Don Bosco School, Bishop’s House.

The Don Bosco School is an ever living name and an ever burning flame that has always been shining with all its might to enlighten the hope of the future world, the young soul so that they may also shine with the brilliance of the sun, giving light to all who are still in the dark.

Don Bosco School Bishop House, Tezpur is a Catholic Institution owned and managed by the Diocese of Tezpur. The School had its beginning at Bishop’s House Tezpur. It started with 20 boys in class VI in the year 1971 with the principal, Fr. Mathew Kunnath, two brothers, two sisters and two teachers. The honour of establishing the school goes to Late Bishop Joseph Mittanthany, the then Bishop of Tezpur. He was repeatedly requested by some guardians of Tezpur whose sons had no English Medium school to pursue their studies after they had completed their primary education at St. Joseph’s Convent school Tezpur. The convent had no provision for boys who passed class V and a majority of them dropped out. As there was already an Assamese medium school in the Bishop’s House complex, Bishop then asked Fr. Mathew Kunnath to open a section of English Medium with class VI. So, on 18th January 1971, the first batch of students had their first day of classes in Don Bosco English Medium School at Bishop’s House.

In the year 1972, Rev. Fr. John Mulamgothra was appointed principal and in 1975 Fr. Mathew Nellickal took the leadership of Don Bosco School as Principal and served, for 9 long years. Under his capable leadership, the first batch of students appeared for the HSLC Examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam in 1976.

With the appointment of Bishop Robert Kerketta SDB, in 1981, as the Bishop of Tezpur, a new era of Don Bosco School began. With the growing number of students, hostelers, etc. the Bishop’s House Campus was becoming congested. He had a dream for Don Bosco School. He purchased a new plot of land at Nikamul, by the side of NH 37 for the school.

On 1st July 1984, Fr. Mathew Anchukandam was appointed principal of the school. Under his capable leadership, Don Bosco School achieved 9th position in that year in HSLC Examination. On 1st February 1986, Fr. John Moolachira was appointed principal of the school. On 28th December 1987, Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta, blessed the site and laid the foundation for Don Bosco School at Nikamul and the school building construction started in 1988. The new School building and campus attracted the attention of many as it was spacious and with better facilities and free from the hustle and bustle of the town.

In the year 1989, Fr. John Moolachira moved into the new building with 525 boys and 17 teachers to the new building, while the primary section from class I-IV, numbering 450 students and 12 teachers along with principal Fr. Abraham Kuttilampel stayed in the old complex. After Fr. Abraham, Rev. Fr. Sebastian K.V. was appointed principal of Don Bosco School Bishop’s House till 1997.

By the end of 1989, the school building was completed. The High school was blessed and inaugurated respectively by Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta, the then Bishop of Tezpur and Mr. Brindaban Goswami, the Minister of Education of Govt. of Assam at a Solemn function on 25th January 1990.

After shifting of Don Bosco School from Bishop’s House to the new site, Assamese medium school continued in Bishop’s House campus. The enrollment of the students in Don Bosco Assamese Medium School gradually declined by the year 2012-2013. Hence, the managing committee under the chairmanship of Most Rev. Michael Akasius Toppo, the present Bishop of Tezpur, decided to close down the existing Assamese Medium school and start English Medium school once again. In the year 2014, Fr. Nathaniel Dhanwar was given the responsibility to restart classes. He had a very humble beginning with 20 students enrolled in class I managed by one sister and two Teachers. In the year 2015, Fr. Clement Ekka was appointed Principal of the School and he served till 2022. Gradually, the number of students increased. At present Fr. Theodore Purty is the principal of the school and there are 440 students with 21 Teaching and non-teaching staffs. In the year 2025, our First Batch of 21 students appeared for HSLC examination with First Division-20, Second Division-1. And in 2026, 22 students appeared, with 22 securing First Division.  

With the Motto “Wisdom and Courage”, the school always has been marching forward from its very inception, leading the Bosconians along with it. There has been constant effort of the dedicated and well trained staffs to develop the individual personality of each student and to bring out those qualities which are best and noblest in them and achieve excellence in all their endeavors. All throughout the year, several activities are undertaken so that the students can excel not only in academic field but also in extracurricular activities. Many literary and sports activities are organized in the school which are enjoyed by all. Annual sports week is celebrated every year where the students can show their true strength, and their natural talents.

The aim of Don Bosco school is the overall development of the students in their life. Don Bosco school teaches students to love and serve one another. Don Bosco Bishop’s House has always stood proudly, and will continue to stand proudly, giving rise to young Indians of whom the whole nation will be proud.
